to go eco or not..
I started writing a post about advertising.. probably will spare it for some other time.. for i found something so interesting while doing my "research" ..
Definition:
Ecodriving is a way of driving that reduces fuel consumption, greenhouse gas
emissions and accident rates. Ecodriving is about driving in a style suited to
modern engine technology: smart, smooth and safe driving techniques that lead to
average fuel savings of 5-10%.
Ecodriving offers benefits for drivers of
cars, vans, lorries and buses: cost savings and fewer accidents as well as
reductions in emissions and noise levels. Several European countries have
implemented successful ecodriving programmes.
The interesting thing is that "eco-driving" will be a part of the driving tests in Britian by 2008 although there isn't a "fail/pass" rule.. the driver should only have the knowledge of the eco-driving system.
The reason behind this is basically to lower the amount of pollution in Britian as well as following "fellow countries" such as Netherlands and other countries...
The government move follows similar initiatives in other countries, including
the Netherlands, where the 'New Driving' programme estimates that drivers can
cut fuel use by nearly a third. The development comes after ministers faced
criticism for failing to meet carbon reduction targets, especially from road
transport
Another reason which was stated in the same article was that they predicted that the prices would hit to 1 pound per litre.. so it is going to be a way to cut costs..
Critics:
1. researchers found the environment 'gives people a good feeling, but it's not an incentive for them to change their behaviour'.
2. it only saves 2 pound a week: less than the price of a large cup of coffee
3. 30 million licence holder will not be affected with the test.
Few things:
1. It is a way of changing the behaviour of the people and probably make them more "aware" of the effect it has on the environment.
2. They are taking steps against the increase in oil prices by finding ways to cut fuel consumption by THIRD.. what are we doing?
3. I mentioned above one of the reasons was to cut CO2.. the interesting point was that there are carbon reduction targets which where failed.. by any chance do we have any such targets?
4. We all heard that the testing procedures will change.. do you think that such programs would help decrease the number of road accidents in the UAE?
A Lost Dot:
I Am typing those words while hearing the "daily" symphony conducted after the persistent invitation of "a road criminal: مجرم طريق" and maestro "dubai police" .. location.. one of Dubai's highways... cost: ............ depends on many other factors.. !!!!!

interesting..
but i don't understand, what does the actual eco-driving strategy consist of?
i mean, what does the driver have to do to achieve this strategy that preserves the environment?
i dont think that accidents will be reduced as a result. maybe pollution
sleepless.. sorry for not explaining it further.. thought the definition would explain it ! :)
il mohim.. there you go.. to be an ecodriver this is what you should consider:
Drive more smoothly: harsh accelerating and braking use up much more fuel
· Avoid excessive speed, especially on motorways
· Watch ahead to anticipate when to slow down or stop well in advance
· Change gear as soon as possible, ideally around 1,500-2,500 revs
· Once the engine is warm, turn it off if you are going to stop for longer than a minute
· Keep tyre pressure at right level
· Take any excess baggage out of the car, and racks and boxes off the roof
· Switch off or turn down air conditioning and heating
· Avoid unnecessary trips
· Buy a more efficient car
Are you willing to do that to make the environment "less polluted" ?
Practical Utopian.. but dont you think that doing the list above could at least minimize the road accidents caused by negligence of the driver and safety of his car? like for an example if he maintains well tyres and makes sure they are on the right level of pressaure then the accidents caused from tyres being burst might decrease 9a7? :)
come to think of it, what you stated up above makes quite the logical sense to preserve our environment
never denied it... my second question.. do you think it is going to decrease the number of road accidents?
yes i do. because the environmental strategy requires more responsible driving methods.
Novelist + Environmentalist = Good combination :-)
The points you mentioned, I think if everyone started following them, we will definitely see a sharp decline in the accidents & also the smog level.
The air in Dubai & other emirates is definitely not as clean as it once used to be, especially near the highways. The reason? More cars on the road, which are most of the time stuck in traffic with their engines running. The solution?
Do what Singapore has succesfully implemented. Make owning a car a very expensive affair. Construct an efficient public transport system. The result? People find it attractive & economical to use the taxis, buses, ferries & rail instead of owning, running & maintaining a car. By the way, Singapore also has almost the same population size as UAE although area wise, we are a giant when compared to the tiny Singapore.
And the good news is that it least the authorities in Dubai have realized this. I think RTA is well on that path.
interesting info you had about singapore there DG .. thank you so much
now don't start with RTA .. today isn't their day with me :p seriously am starting to really wonder where on earth am i when i am hitting the roads.. exits and turns and you find yourself in the land of nod ! lol
thanks DG for your comment..
